What you need to know to apply

Teachers must:

• Meet the qualifications for teaching in primary or secondary schools in their country of nationality or last legal residence;
• Be working as a teacher in the home country or country of legal residence at the time of application, or, if not working as a teacher, otherwise meet the eligibility qualifications and (a) have recently (within 12 months of application) completed an advanced degree and (b) have two years of full-time teaching experience within the past eight years;
• Have a degree-equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree in either education or the academic subject field in which they intend to teach;
• Have a minimum of two years (24 months) of teaching or related professional experience;
• Satisfy the standards of the U.S. state in which they will teach;
• Be of good reputation and character;
• Be seeking to enter the United States for the purpose of full-time teaching as a teacher of record at a primary (including pre-kindergarten) or secondary accredited educational institution in the United States (pre-kindergarten teachers must teach full-time, and at the pre-kindergarten level, may teach only language immersion at an accredited host school);
• Possess sufficient proficiency in the English language.

Evaluation process

1. Credential evaluation. 2. Certify by Florida State Dept. 3. Certificate of elegibility. 4. Visa.

• 
  1. The applicant must submit an original credential evaluation report that includes a statement of United States degree equivalency and a breakdown of coursework into descriptive course titles and semester-hour credits. 
• 2.   When you send a complete application package to the Florida Department of Education  requesting a Florida teaching certificate, your complete package is evaluated to determine your eligibility for a Florida certificate. The result of that determination is mailed to you as an Official Statement of Status of Eligibility.

  The Official Statement is valid for three years and has two functions:

  1. Officially states whether or not "you are eligible" for a Temporary Certificate or a Professional Certificate in the subject area you requested, and
  2. Provides you with a customized list of the requirements you must complete to be issued full state certification in Florida.

  3. If your Official Statement Shows that "You Are Eligible" for a certificate

  • Your Florida Temporary Certificate is issued when:
    • Your Official Statement states that "you are eligible" for at least a Temporary Certificate, and
    • You are employed as a teacher and your fingerprints are processed before your Official Statement expires.
  • When your certificate is issued, the list of requirements on your Official Statement must be completed before the expiration date of your Temporary Certificate.
  • If your Official Statement expires before you are employed in a Florida school, you may re-apply for a new Official Statement. You will be then evaluated for eligibility based upon the certification laws and rules in effect at the time your next application is received.

* If a foreign-educated teacher fails to meet a state's minimum certification requirements, he or she may be able to complete additional coursework to meet state standards.
